About This Arch

For most of the last millennium, arches were the best way to create large openings in walls. They allowed for the construction of doors, windows, vaults, corridors and large rooms. By the 20th century, the best way to create large openings had changed. New materials were stronger such as steel I-beams and reinforced concrete that could efficiently span large distances better. Efficiency in this cases meant how deep and therefore how costly an I-beam had to be to span a given distance such as 10 meters / 33 feet.

Design in the 1930s was inspired by ocean liners, cars, trains that all promised a new era. Buildings emphasized long horizontal lines that were now possible due to stronger and more efficient materials. They were often accompanied by nautical inspired filleted curves. Design of this period is known as Art Deco or Streamline Moderne. A rounded flat arch suggests the long spans possible in the modern era alonged with the filleted corners popular at the time.

The Arch Series

Arches were first used to construct underground tunnels, drainage systems, and to span over windows and doorways. These arches could only support small openings as ancient walls were extremely heavy. Pointed arches were different. They allowed for thinner walls to be constructed due to vertical structural loads being carried more efficiently to the ground. Lighter walls meant more windows that could be taller and wider. Indoor spaces subsequently changed from being very dark to very bright. Arches became more decorative over time as structural concerns were easier to overcome. The thirty-two arches in this collections span thousands of years on all continents. You can easily find several types of arch walking around any major city. Arches provided an essential stepping stone in creating the world we live in today.
